Lumberjanes Vol 2 (or #5-8)

Review:

Lumberjanes Vol. 2 - Noelle Stevenson Lumberjanes #5 - Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis LUMBERJANES #6 - Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson Lumberjanes #7 - Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson Lumberjanes #8 - Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis

Okay, so I read the volume and not the issues individually but the issues have the same info, so I added them to the review. The volume turned out to have a little more and really made it worthwhile to wait for the volumes rather than read the issues, but that may require more patience than I have. I’ve wanted to just binge through it now that I have a bunch of issues available on Scribd.

All the things that I loved about the issues that comprised the first volume are still here. The girl are well written, their friendships are true to life, at least in my experience, and their capable. I also have a strange love of the liberal use of “what the junk” and “splainin”. I can’t help myself.

The storyline gets even better in this volume as they learn about the strangeness of their camp. They took the initial draw and just made it better. And Jen, the cabin leader, is my favorite. The main benefit to the volume over the issues is that the volume has whatever excerpts from the Lumberjane Field Manual covering whatever badge they earn in the issue.

There was also this other awesome thing. I had seen it back in #2 when Jen yelled “Holy Mae Jamison” but I didn’t recognize the name. It’s shameful, I know. But I made the connection then she exclaimed “Holy bell hooks” in #5. Which just meant that I looked up every name that came after. I thought using the names of famous women of their heritage was amazing. Another character says “Agnodice” in #6 and then Jen throws down with Sister Rosetta Tharpe in that same issue. The last one was Annie Smith Peck in #8. I love it!

(the names are linked to the ladies’ wikipedia pages, but Goodreads users will have to just google them.)

Seriously, the whole thing just makes my little feminist heart flutter.

    1. Thanks. I had felt that way a little in the first set, especially since I read them months apart. But this one helped me make sense of it, so did reading the whole thing in a few days. I get that way about Monstress. Love it, but it confuses me. I think I need to just go back and binge through the storyline one night.

      1. No, I thought about it. I know what you mean about expense. I almost exclusively get my books from the library, but I do have a Scribd subscriptions and I’ve gotten a few from there too. Scribd has all the issues, but the first two volumes were at the library. I can’t afford to buy everything I read.

      2. I have gone back and bought some though. I did that with the Body Book. I bought it because it had a bunch of graphs and lists that were great references consolidated into that one book. It’s really helpful.
