Monstress by Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda

Review:

Monstress #1 - An all-new ONGOING SERIES!, Image Comic 2nd Printing, Sana Takeda, Marjorie M. Liu Monstress #2 - Marjorie M. Liu, Sana TakedaI’m in love with this series. It makes my feminist heart flutter wildly. Here’s the back cover:

Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900’s Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers.

This is a female dominated world that is far from Utopian. There are weird animal/human hybrids. There is an evil religious organization with Inquisitrixes. The protagonist is not a nice girl or a sweet girl. Her strength is neither derived from some “uniquely feminine” quality nor would it really be called “masculine”. She just is what she is and feels power in that. It is brilliant and beautiful. The art is amazing. The world is intriguing. I can’t wait to devour the rest of the series.

But I will wait because the series is only on #6. It won’t be patiently, though. I bought mine at Amazon but it’s also available from  the Book Depository. (both links go to the whole volume one, which wasn’t out when I originally posted this but has since been compiled)
