The Land of Stories: A Grimm Warning by Chris Colfer

This is the third of the Land of Stories books, continuing the story of Alex and Connor. They are back and a little more experienced now. They aren’t just haphazardly getting drawn in to the fray, they know the risk and they go in anyway.

This one is fun for a variety of reasons. This is a fun world built around familiar characters and stories, so it’s easy to jump back into. With the twins being a little older, it was time to introduce a few crushes or love interests and that was done tactfully, given their ages. Mother Goose is as entertaining as ever. Running back into older characters, like Trolbella is just fun as is the bravery of our traditional princesses as they appear in this series. Alex and Connor make a great team, too. They respect each others differences and strengths, as much or more than one can typically expect of siblings.

This is a great addition to a series I’ve already enjoyed a lot, but it’s not necessary to have read the other books to enjoy this one. You’ll miss some background details as to why people are as familiar as they are or why these kids are trusted in the way they are, but what’s vital to this story is explained in it as well. My only complaint is that, as a parent, I did found myself mortified by the actions of these kids. I understand that it’s a YA/Middle school story but I couldn’t help but wonder how real parents would react to kids doing some of the things that these kids do. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say that the Otherworld issues are not the point of the story and are not resolved in what might be thought of as a satisfactory manner for any parent or guardian. The fairy tale world, on the other hand, is the point and well written and resolved.

It’s a great book and easy to enjoy for everyone. I’ll definitely give it to my kid when he gets to the right age for it too.

Have you read it? What did you think?
