Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie

What is herstory to you?

Certainly, biographies are a big part of it. I have read a few memoirs from some interesting women, but this is my first biography of a great woman in history. I figured that anyone whose name ends with “the Great” would be a great place to start.

I was right. First, let my praise Massie for an excellent work. I appreciate that he included the backgrounds of other key figures in Catherine’s life and brief explanations of what was happening in other countries as they impacted her story. He also does a great job of explaining the actions of those mentioned while neither apologizing for nor villainizing their decisions.

So what kind of woman was Catherine the Great?

Well, there was a reason they call her great. She constantly moved her country forward. Some battles were harder than others and some never came to fruition but she persevered. She was a powerhouse in a time when it was hard to have control over your own life as a woman or a monarch.

Anyone interested in women’s history or herstory should read this!

Or listen to it, which is what I did on Audible! Next up is The Wishing Spell from The Land of Stories series, get at your local library or my astore!
