Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide – updated

I had been meaning to get around to reading this book for a while and I wish I had stopped everything to pick it up the moment I first heard the name.

Half the Sky does a great job of outlining many of the wrongs being done to women in poverty, ways that they are escaping from it and ways that the rest of us can help. They give detailed descriptions of campaigns that have helped and some who have not, but they include the “why” in there too. It’s important to know why one thing succeeded over another if we’re going to replicate the successful results.

I also appreciated that there was a range of solutions to combat the range of problems. Nothing was a one stop fix though it was definitely repeated that education makes progress in every facet.

The best part of this book was that it gets the reader interested in helping and gives them a direction to take that interest. The book ends with 4 things that could be done in the ten minutes after finishing to get anyone down the road to helping the world improve. Then the appendix has a list of other sites that have ways for anyone to contribute.

The advocacy of the authors didn’t stop on the day this book was published though. They went on to form the Half the Sky Movement and continue to spread awareness of the oppressions of women worldwide with several ongoing projects and partnerships. Go to their YouTube Channel for videos featuring the issues and women who are fighting them, PBS did a documentary on the movement which is also on Netflix and available for purchase on Amazon; and Like them on Facebook. There is a follow up book, A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity, that continues to provide information on the best ways to give to help women and girls around the world and also has a a documentary available for purchase.

Here’s a video from the YouTube channel:

Next up is Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, get at your local library or my astore!
